I have no reason to buy an iPhone, but probably will, anyway

I am not a technophile - don't own an iPod, couldn't care whether my phone has camera as I just need to make and receive calls but I can't wait for iPhone to reach Asia next year even though it will be the most expensive asset that I have purchase for my personal needs other than my house as I for no logical reason, just find it COOL... It must be the music factor + meeting a practical need and looks simple enough for me to use it.

iPhone fever!

Wow! I'm in Malaysia and I can feel the iPhone heat all over me too. The sad thing is, iPhone will not reach Asia until much later :-( Anyway, I find it interesting to know that iPhone is touching people from all layers of life after reading this article on who is queuing for iPhone Friday in New York... Bravo!

The article does make a couple of good points.

You can't really deny that the current semi-monopoly structure of US cellular service industry is a drag on innovation and growth. All you have to do travel to other countries to see how far behind we are in development and adoption of wireless services. The US's high-price, low-service model is enforced by the double-whammy of the service providers' restrictive customer service agreements and control over phone technology. For better or worse, this is the market the iPhone is entering.

The interesting thing about the iPhone is that it's the first wireless device not modified by a wireless company before release -- AT&T/Cingular did not even see the prototype. Steve Jobs was able to broker a deal that was acceptable to the entrenched interests of the wireless industry and the record companies, while at the same time giving consumers some features they actually want. That's the real breakthough. We'll see if it's a big enough crack in the dam to give market forces a chance to work.

Once the hype dies down, people will lose interest

Think the inability for apple to sell the iphone unlocked will limit its potential.

this will lead to a loss of potential sale for pple who want to use the phone outside america and willing to pay for it. We will tend to loose interest thus apple loses a sale.

it should've been more a: get it while its hot. cos once the hype dies pple will lose interest.

Marketing hype vs. reality

It's hard to estimate the effectiveness of marketing hype vs. the reality of the lack of features and the humongous price tag. I'd personally rather cram a big MicroSD card in my T-Mobile Dash, use the mobile version of Windows Media to listem to music and enjoy the Dash's better feature set rather than lay out huge money for the poorer usability features in the iPhone. And T-Mobile's customer service is far superior to AT&T's.

AT&T clowns

Bought iPhone @ 20:00 EDT on June 29th. Still waiting on AT&T to activate. What a bunch of clowns. I've been on the phone at least 6 of the last 12 hours and still not active.

Is it true that in order to use the full sync features of the iphone you have to be running the mac os?? I was told by a person that just purchased an iphone that tech support told him if he wanted to sync his contacts and calendar etc. he would have to buy a mac computer because they do not support Microsoft Windows for their device. Anyone know if this is true or not???

The iPhone's three built-in sensors: accelerometer, proximity, and ambient light, improve the user experience by doing smart things without the user intervening or even having to think about them -typically Apple

What about the fact that the AT&T network is the slowest network for broadband? The Iphone has all of these cool features that can't be fully utilized on the AT&T network.
