What does HP mean?

Will someone from HP please explain to the rest of the world what you mean when you say you have SaaS? Subscription licensing or the same old legacy software served up via an ASP model is not SaaS. Please don't point to your marketing materials as they are the source of the confusion.

Sincerely not expecting an answer,

Cost conscious?

If HP was cost conscious, perhaps they'd lower the cost on their software! I used to manage a 125+ organization which had Quality Center deployed--we needed 30 more licenses and they wanted $100k for that 'upgrade'.

Outrageous. In subsequent positions, I supported open source and other, more affordable, solutions.

SaaS is more than ITSM on the 'net!

Rhet from Service-Now works in a very small part of the domain that HP covers. HP's SaaS offering comes from the acquisition of Mercury Interactive, and as such covered a lot of Application Management areas, particularily related to functional and performance test. These applications - Quality Center and Performance Center have been developed to be SaaS compliant.

It is strange how a couple of vendors try to grab hold of a generic concept and state that this can only be seen from their perspective. This type of proprietary thinking is perhaps one of the main resons why ASP never took off properly, and I fear that the same will happen to SaaS: Service-Now.com and sales-Force.com will limit the concept so much that the rest of the IT world will leave it alone. This will definitely not benefit such niche vendors.

More proprietary thinking

I guess HP's claims of SaaS for products NOT originating from the Mercury acquisition have just been dismissed...that was easy. But now I can't resist asking, what does 'SaaS compliant' mean?

The rest of rolff's response makes me want to pull out what little hair I have left.

So instead of bickering over details, here is a list of questions any IT pro can ask their vendor to determine if they will be getting the real benefit of true SaaS from their purchase:

- How is HP 'SaaS' more cost effective than a traditional, on-premise installation of an HP application?
- How quickly can you set up a proof of concept?
- Can you show me a live demo now?
- How is the application administered and who is involved?
- How do I change or customize the application?
- How is the application upgraded, how long will it take, and who pays for it?
- How often will the application be upgraded?
- If I want to integrate with other products, how does that work with HP 'SaaS'?
- Can I speak with an HP ‘SaaS’ customer?

HP SaaS

Hi Rhett,

I do not represent HP, but work as manger of an HP Software partner in Scandinavia. HP SAAS is based on preconfigured implementations, so it is up and running immediately. Still, the solutions may be adapted per customer if desired, and all data content is, naturally, separate per customer.

So you're an ASP (not that there is anything wrong with that), Service-now.com is SaaS, and somebody needs to explain the difference to HP.

I am a pre-sales engineer that works with Rhett...

If anybody wants to see SaaS in action, let me know... I will build you a fully functional SaaS deployment in about 10 minutes! Fully functional and available for you to customize until your heart is content! :) Better yet, I will leave it up and operational for you for 30 days, and if you want to subscribe to our SaaS service, we will just move it to (of course, at no cost or hassle to you) to our 'production' servers, and then upgrade it 3 times a year, with no additional costs or professional services... You will not lose any of your customizations and you will always be on the latest version of code.

That is SaaS! :)
