Storage analyst Deni Connor focuses on storage, application and infrastructure management in this twice-weekly newsletter.
At Storage Networking World last week, a number of vendors, including Sanbolic, Agami Systems, Intel, Robobak and Spectra Logic unveiled bunches of products ranging from clustered file systems, to easy-to-deploy IP storage-area networks to some of the first Fibre Channel over Ethernet products.
Here are the announcements from Sanbolic, Agami Systems, Intel, Robobak and Spectra Logic:
Sanbolic announced that its Melio clustered file system is now available for Windows Server 2008. The Melio file system provides concurrent read/write access from several servers to single volumes of SAN.
IP SAN vendor Agami Systems announced an iSCSI storage appliance – the AIS3006i – which provides 6TB of physical capacity and full RAID protection. The AIS3006i has eight Gigabit Ethernet interfaces to the network and can accommodate as many as 1,024 connections to host computers. Additionally the AIS3006i includes replication, snapshot and thin provisioning capabilities. The AIS3006i is priced starting at $33,995.
Intel too introduced a family of Fibre Channel over Ethernet adapters. The company developed an FCoE initiator (driver in everyone’s parlance) that is bundled with its 10Gig Ethernet adapters for PCI Express. The Intel 10 Gigabit AF DA Dual Port Server Adapter is price at $799.
Robobak announce Version 8 of its managed data protection software for remote and branch offices. Version 8 adds Agentless Continuous Data Protection that lets admins schedule backup operations for the continuous protection of changes. Additionally, Version 8 deploys auto-deployment, which senses computers as they are added to the network and adds them to the assigned backup as well as schedules them for bare metal recovery. Other features include support for Oracle, SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL and DB2, and simultaneous file replication to multiple sites. The software is priced at less than $25,000 per terabyte of data.
Finally and perhaps most importantly, Spectra Logic introduced tape management software that it calls Media Lifecycle Management, which monitors and reports on the status of the tape media, recommending when tape should be replaced prior to failure, based on when thresholds are reached. Media Lifecycle Management works with LTO tape and Spectra’s BlueScale software and monitors the life of the tape. Users can track tape use based on 30 parameters. Barcode information on the tape links it to MLM. MLM is available on all T-Series libraries and is expected to ship his month.
