FBI warns of holiday cyber scams; Experts to Feds: Sign the DNS root ASAP

With cyber Monday comes an FBI warning against spam containing malware and phishing attempts that appear to be greeting cards and ads for shopping bargains; Internet security gurus and leading vendors are urging the U.S. federal government to rapidly deploy security and authentication mechanisms at the top level of the DNS hierarchy, which is known as the root zone. Microsoft warns of malware; IBM's top predictions

Microsoft is warning users of a rise in attacks on a vulnerability in Windows that could trigger a worm infestation on networks. And the company is encouraging users to apply an emergency patch released in October. A talking Web, solar technology embedded in windows and cell phones, and the end of forgetting - will all come in the next five years, IBM predicts in its third annual Next Five in Five list, detailing innovations that could change our lives in the next half-decade. Intel cuts revenue forecast; BT cuts 10,000 jobs globally

Intel on Wednesday cut its revenue forecast for the fourth quarter, the latest sign that the global financial crisis is leading to a sharp slowdown in IT spending. Intel cited "significantly" weaker-than-expected demand for its products worldwide, and said companies involved in manufacturing PCs are aggressively reducing their component inventories. In other news, British telecom operator BT Group will lay off 10,000 workers as it seeks to cut costs and improve the profitability of its services branch. Most of the job cuts will come from indirect labor, such as subcontractors and offshore workers. (4:17)

AT&T last week completed the transition of its IP traffic to a consolidated IP/MPLS backbone by deploying 40-Gigabit Ethernet technology over its entire U.S. ultra-long-haul network.
